How EE Bonds Work
Series EE Bonds earn a fixed interest rate set at purchase. They're guaranteed by the Treasury to double in value at exactly 20 years. After 30 years (final maturity), they stop earning interest entirely. Redeeming before 5 years incurs a 3-month interest penalty.
How I Bonds Work
Series I Bonds earn a composite rate made up of a fixed rate (set at purchase) plus an inflation rate (resets every 6 months based on CPI-U data). I Bond rates are announced May 1 and November 1. They mature after 30 years and cannot be redeemed for the first 12 months.
Early Redemption Penalty
Both EE and I Bonds have a penalty if redeemed before 5 years: you forfeit the last 3 months of interest. After 5 years, there's no penalty. Bonds cannot be redeemed at all during the first 12 months.
